I’ve flown in my dreams too. Once over Bali which is the only way I’ve been there. And we obviously feel the same about airplane travel, although I have an overarching fear of it that travels with me everywhere I go. (I recently wrote about it and came to the conclusion that I might be a flight risk.) Besides the joy and freedom I feel in my flying dreams, I also realize that I am secure and free because I am totally in control. Go figure.
Yes, the joy that comes with those nighttime journeys! I hate flying IRL, and do it as little as possible. And I love being home, so I don't really feel like I'm missing anything. And one day, maybe I'll put my resistance to the side, the fear, the anxiety, and travel. And maybe I won't! But there are always my dreams. xo
You are glorious here, I was utterly swept away. I loved it for obvious reasons as well as other reasons that were deeply satisfying. Great job, you. ✈️♥️
Thanks, darling friend. I had forgotten how soaring this post was. It's one of my essays from when I was relatively new on the platform. I had so much fun writing it. xo!
I do. And I'd forgotten about that song. Now I have to go listen to it. Love Talking Heads so very much! You're so interesting Rona. You say you've never seen Fiddler on the Roof, but you vibe on Talking Heads. I love you! xo
Ahh...to fly...!!! What a beautiful capture of that experience, Nan. What I am most amazed by is that you remembered this dream in such detail! I can remember snippets of my dreams now and then, but they typically go right back to that home where dreams are made as soon as I wake up. BTW, I love that beautiful, happy smile on your face as you jumped for joy!!!
Thanks, Cathy. This story was more of a composite than an actual retelling of a single dream. I used to have flying dreams pretty regularly when I was younger. I had one recently that surprised me. It was powerful and fun, and ended in the sadness upon waking when I remembered that it wasn't a literal super power. It resides in my heart, for sure, though!
What a gorgeous piece, Nan! You had me flying with you. xx
Thank you, Christina. That means a lot to me. I'd forgotten how much fun I had when I wrote it. xo
I think I might start flying on your airline. It sounds delightful!
And it would be delightful to have you! xo

dream flight (poem I wrote about my childhood flights! Loved yours.)
I sailed over
the apple trees
their leaves
tickling my legs
the scent
of overripe fruit
under, over,
around
tilting my arms
in the humid air
I swept past
the field, cruised
over our home
waved at my sister
dipped and surged
through the sky
the ephemeral
faded, but
decades later
I remember
the light
and spacious
power
of flight

Do you know the Talking Heads song “And She Was,” about a woman who suddenly finds herself flying? Maybe that woman is you.

How wonderful that you had a recent flying dream and reconnected with that feeling!
Indeed! xo
